Tuesday Tips and Techniques: Playing with Paper Two

Acrylic Paint Stamp Technique

This technique takes some prep, but once the prep is over you can design LOTS of paper!  The first order of business is to gather all of your supplies.  You will need stamps, stencils, card stock (or other paper - experiment! When Barb and I did this technique in her studio, we also used muslin fabric and it worked great.), craft acrylics, a paint brush, containers for mixing, water, paper towel (or white shop towels - these will act as your stamp pad), and a brayer (I actually used an old rolling pin).

The next step is to select your colors.  You want to choose three or four colors that are relatively analogous (next to each other) on the color wheel.  For example, you don't want to choose red and green or add yellow and purple together because they will become brown.  Of course, if you're looking for lovely browns, this is a good way to go.

You're going to mix your craft acrylics with water in an approximate 50/50 mix.  You want to make it similar to ink consistency.  I used an egg carton to mix my paints, filling each cup about half full.  Sparkly and metallic paints turn out great using this technique.

Next, you need to prep what will be your "stamp pad" by folding your paper towel or shop cloth.

I used a shop cloth.  First, I folded it into quarters...

Accordion-folded it all the way across, and then folded it onto itself into thirds.

Now the fun begins!  This is going to be messy, but it's going to yield lovely results.  Take a paint brush and begin applying your paint mixes to your folded towel.

Make sure the towel is totally saturated with your paint mixtures.  Open your towel in sections and be sure to get paint on every white surface.

You'll end up with a totally saturated, beautiful "stamp pad".  Now it's time to decorate some paper!  Choose your first page and lay your painted towel on top of it.

I've selected one of my Styrofoam stamps to being.  I pushed the stamp into the towel in different positions.  Part of the excitement of this method is that you don't know what you're getting until you lift the towel.

I wonder how these leaves will print?  I'll just lay them out on the paper and use the rolling pin across them.

Wow!  I like the way these turned out.  I like them a lot!

Just tossing your towel unto the paper in a haphazard fashion will put a few interesting lines and creases on the page.

I decided to use this piece of fencing that I brought back from Barb's - Thanks, Barb!

I used some more of my homemade, Styrofoam stamps...

....and then I experimented with a piece of needlepoint plastic I have.  It turned out to be one of my favorite results.

I decided to re-position my towel and add some additional stamping to the mesh background.  I like!

Combining several stamps yields surprising results.

The more you print, the softer the prints become.  I printed eleven pages with this towel, but I could have printed another half dozen.  Don't even think about throwing the towel into the trash! Let it dry and you can use it in another project.  If you've used two-ply paper, you'll be able to pull it apart when it dries.

These papers dry rapidly, so once you've finished with first printing, you can prepare a second towel and apply additional prints over your first.  You'll get some great results.   I used turquoise, light green, and gold mixes for my second printing, and I'm quite pleased with my finished papers.

I hope you'll give this technique a try.  You'll have a lot of fun and you'll be surprised at how many wonderful combinations you come up with as you're experimenting.  The only problem will be what to do with all these wonderful papers once you've finished!  Now what will I do to complete the back of these papers?

Weekend Journal

Well, it's the week before Christmas and all of the final preparations and festivities have been kicked into high gear.  The tree is up, the lights are lit, and somewhere the aroma of cookies baking in the oven fill the air with that holiday aroma.  Personally, I haven't baked one cookie yet, but the tree is up and the lights are lit, so in the words of Meatloaf,  2 out of 3 ain't bad!

I've been working feverishly on a painting that needs to be finished before Christmas Eve, so there hasn't been a lot of art journaling.  I have, however, gotten a good start in my 2012 daily art journal, by prepping some pages with left over paint.  Here are some of the pages that I have prepped with paint.

I just chose pages randomly throughout my journal and using a one inch brush, I randomly smeared my left over paint across the pages in no particular fashion.  I don't know why or how it works, but I do know that when I get to each of these pages, they will be perfect for what I want to express that day.  Synchronicity and intuition are marvelous creative tools!

I did find a few minutes to play with some backgrounds that I had in a smaller journal that I've been working on the last couple months.  I finished the backgrounds intuitively using left over paint from the painting I've been working on and a couple markers.  They were a lot of fun after a tiring, structured day.

I'm teaching myself piano, so it's no wonder to me that I see musical notes wherever I look!  These journal spreads are nothing to write home about, but when you're creating at an intuitive level, the outcome isn't the goal.  The goal is to let your inner child come out and play.  Have you let yourself create some pages in this fashion?  Do you let your inner child just play with your paints, markers, and inks?

2010

I thought it would be fun to take a look back at what I was doing this time last year, so I took a look through all the images I have stored on my computer.  I noticed immediately that it looks like we already had some significant snow.  We really haven't had any significant snowfall this year although it is lightly snowing as I type this.

I was doing a lot of walking at the beach, and I have to say I really missed it this year.  I was so devoted to walking in 2010.  It's sad that it only took four cold, snowy months to get out of the habit and loose the devotion.  We'll see what 2012 brings.

Here's an intuitive painting from this time last year.  Apparently, "intuitive" is popular with me this time of year!

I did find some time for experimentation though.  I noticed a lot of birds in my pages from last year.  It seems like there were many more birds here then.  I'm realizing that I haven't seen any birds in a couple weeks now, and I miss them.

Take a look at what you created in 2010.  How does it make you feel to look back at what you were creating a year ago?  What new techniques have you tried since then?  Do you feel like you've grown artistically?

I hope this post finds you in the holiday spirit, and I hope you're on your way to making lots of cherished memories with your friends and loved ones.  I hope you're feeling happy and healthy, and I hope you're finding plenty of opportunity to "Celebrate, LOVE, and Create!"

Tuesday Tips & Techniques: Backgrounds

It's that time of year - the spirit of giving is all around, and I would like to give you, my wonderful readers, a small holiday gift!

Here are two background images designed and painted by myself.  Please feel free to download these background images and incorporate them into your own fantastic journal pages.  I have used the Microsoft Paint program to re-size them for the blog post, but if you have this program, you should be able to make them larger if you would like.

If you would like the original file, please leave a message in the comment box and I'll be happy to email the original jpeg file to you.

These background pages were made using water soluble crayons, watercolors, and alcohol.  What techniques will you use with these images?  Please feel free to share your wonderful works of art with all of us!  If you complete a page using one or both of these images, please post a link to your work in the comments section - we want to see!

Happy Holidays to you all, and thanks for making Tuesday Tips and Techniques a great success.  'Tis the season - get out there and "Celebrate, LOVE, and Create!"

Weekend Journal

Gathering Loose Ends

I've been spending some time gathering loose ends.  When I finish a journal I always decorate the cover, and my last finished journal has been laying around with nothing but a gessoed cover.  I finally applied a colored pencil drawing and some acrylic paint to the cover, and now it is ready to add to my growing stack of journals.

You may remember the gardening journal that I began at the beginning of the growing season.  Well, I've added quite a lot to it since I last shared it with you. I have to admit that I've also been procrastinating.  I still have multiple pictures to print out for my pages, but I should be finishing in another couple of weeks.  I still have my last peppers and green beans to pick, so that means more photos, too.  Here are some of the pages - most still incomplete.

Prepping Pages

I feel like the squirrels I see, running around gathering nuts preparing for the colder days ahead.  I've been prepping lots of pages with backgrounds in anticipation of major art journaling endeavors.  Here are some of the pages I've prepped in my current journal.  Some of them are gessoed, and most have multiple layers of artist acrylics.

Even a single color applied over gesso offers lots of possibilities!

Another New Journal

I've had a book called, "Creative Wildfire", by L.K. Ludwig for quite some time.  This book included a recycled blank journal, and for all this time I refused to use it for reasons unknown to even me.  Well, I finally pulled it out and have begun prepping pages in it, too.    I used some of the imagery that was already on the cover, and added gesso and a photocopy of a bird that I drew.

You can see I've used some of the same paint in both journals.  I've also added some Mod Podged images and papers into this journal.

So that's what I've been up to - what have you been doing in your artistic endeavors?  I have to say I'm feeling quite defiant as the days for warm summer walks along the beach, and cool summer nights gazing at the stars are behind me. I know, too, that these beautiful, dramatic, autumn days will soon make way for a long winter and far too much snow.  I say, "Bring it on, winter!"  I'm prepped and ready to go for artistic expression as I "Celebrate, LOVE, and Create!"

PHOTO OF THE DAY

"Harvest Moon" Photo:  Keith Thompson
I've been obsessed with watching the moon the last few weeks; maybe because it remained hidden beneath clouds and rain for so long.  We didn't get to see the full moon, but here it is the night before.
